Coral Springs man found mortally wounded in car

Coral Springs man found unresponsive inside his black Corvette before sunrise at a Pompano Beach shopping center had been wounded by gunfire and later died, authorities said.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported Alex Eichmann, 48, from 630 W. Sample Road to nearby Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, where he was pronounced dead, the agency said.

Eric Eichmann said he last talked with his younger brother, who was leaving a craps game at the Isle Casino in Pompano Beach, at 3:11 a.m.

“He told me he had just about broken even,” Eric Eichmann, 51, said. “I regret that I wasn’t there last night to help him with whatever happened.”

At around 4:30 a.m., deputies were called to the shopping center where a McDonald’s restaurant frequented by the brothers is located. It is just west of Interstate 95.

“I would go to that McDonald’s with my brother, because it was open late, after we would leave the casino,” Eric Eichmann said.

As teenagers, the Eichmann men played soccer for St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale. Alex Eichmann graduated from there in 1986, his brother said.

Eric Eichmann played soccer professionally, including for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and on the 1988 U.S. Olympic team. He is a player development coach for the Boca United Football Club in Boca Raton, a youth soccer program.

After high school, Alex Eichmann attended American University in Washington, D.C. for two years, playing soccer there, his brother said. He later aspired to become a professional jai alai player, and trained at Florida Atlantic University, according to a 1990 Sun Sentinel profile.

“He was a very good jai alai player and we used to go to the Dania Beach fronton,” Eric said. “But he never went quite that far with it, becoming a professional. But he played for fun.”

Eichmann was single, and for more than two decades worked the night shift at an area Walmart store while dabbling in the stock market during the day, his brother said.

“He was one of the nicest guys, and would get along with anybody,” Eric Eichmann said, adding that he did not think his brother had enemies, “none in the world that I am aware of.”

Their father, Otto Eichmann, predeceased his son. In addition to his brother Eric, Alex Eichmann’s survivors include his mother, Ana Eichmann, of Margate, and another brother, Otto Eichmann, Jr., of Connecticut.

“If anyone spoke to him, or saw his car, any help they can provide to the Broward Sheriff’s Office would be much appreciated, so we can find out who did this and why,” Eric Eichmann said.

His family is hoping answers will come soon.

“My brother was one of the most caring people I have ever known,” Eric Eichmann said. “He never wanted to offend anybody or upset anybody. He went out of the way to smooth things over, have everyone be fine.”

The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office said an autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Tuesday.

Investigators are also looking for a white sedan that was seen in the area around the time of the shooting, and ask anyone with information to call Detective John Curcio at 954-321-4212.

Broward County Crime Stoppers accepts anonymous tips at 954-493-8477 or at www.browardcrimestoppers.org. The organization will pay up to $3,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
