The murder of FSU professor Dan Markel focus of NBC ‘Dateline’

The 2014 murder of Florida State University law professor Daniel Markel will be cast into the national spotlight again when it’s the focus of a new NBC “Dateline’’’ episode Friday.

Markel, 41, was shot in the head in the summer of 2014 as he pulled into his home’s garage in Tallahassee. He died the next day at a hospital.

Investigators have described the case as a murder-for-hire plot which had ties to South Florida because of Markel’s ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, of Miami and her family which runs the Adelson Institute for Esthetics and Implant Dentistry in Tamarac. And the alleged hired assassins were also captured by an ATM camera in Broward while returning from Tallahassee right after the murder, according to investigators.

The “Dateline” two-hour episode, called “Cold-blooded” airs 9 p.m. April 13. The story is reported by “Dateline” correspondent Dennis Murphy, a Delray Beach resident.

“This is a cold-blooded a killing as you can get,’’ said Georgia Cappleman, a deputy assistant state attorney in Leon County, Florida, in a preview of the episode.

The news magazine show delved into the murder and the complicated investigation that followed. The episode will also feature Markel’s parents Phil and Ruth Markel who have been baffled over their son’s fatal shooting.

“The day was just the most unbearable day that I could imagine,’’ said Markel’s father in the show’s preview.

On July 18, 2014, Markel had driven his two sons to preschool and had gone to his gym. As he pulled up to the his home, he was shot in the head. Investigators determined the suspect car in Markel’s murder was a metallic green Toyota Prius with dark tinted windows.

Sigofredo Garcia of Miami Beach and Luis Rivera, the suspected hired shooters, were captured by an ATM camera in Broward while returning from Tallahassee right after the murder, investigators said. Two years after Markel was shot, authorities charged Garcia, Rivera and Katherine Magbanua in the murder.

During the investigation, Markel’s ex-wife told police that someone might have done it for her benefit. She also told detectives that her brother Charlie, a South Florida periodontist, had joked about hiring a hit man.

Cellphone records showed calls between Charlie Adelson’s phone and Magbanua who was said to be someone he had dated at the time of Markel’s death.

During a news conference in 2016, police said that Markel’s murder appeared to be tied to his bitter divorce from Adelson, her parents’ “desperate desire” for her and the children to move to South Florida, and a court hearing that may have restricted access to their grandchildren, according to unsealed court documents.

The Adelson family has not been charged in the case and has denied any involvement in Markel’s death.

Garcia and Magbanua are both awaiting trial in the Leon County jail, according to the Tallahasee Democrat. The paper also reported that Rivera pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to seven years in prison to run in addition to a 12-year federal sentence on other charges.
