Players ask for more time in suit against BB&T
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A group of 16 current and former NFL players have asked a U.S. District Court judge for permission to have until June 6 to file a second amendment complaint against BB&T Corp.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported that the lawsuit involves BankAtlantic, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., bank that BB&T acquired in July 2012.

In a separate legal filing, July 13, 2015, has been set as the start date for a potential two-week trial in Miami.

The players said in their Nov. 1 complaint that BankAtlantic allowed a concierge financial management firm, Pro Sports Financial Inc., to open new accounts in their names via forged signatures, and to withdraw nearly $53 million without their permission or knowledge.

All of the transactions occurred before BB&T acquired BankAtlantic, an attorney for the players confirmed. The case is being heard in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

BB&T Corp. appeared to have gained the upper hand in the dispute when Judge Robin Rosenbaum dismissed seven of the 11 claims and dismissed portions of three other claims.

Of the three counts that were partially dismissed, they cover negligence and breach of contract claims, and claims for refund of unauthorized and ineffective funds transfers.

The plaintiffs include Jamaal Anderson, Frank Gore, Santonio Holmes, Jevon Kearse, Ray Lewis, Brandon Meriweather, Santana Moss, Clinton Portis and Fred Taylor. All have connections with south Florida either profes-sionally, collegiately or by residence.
