Bicyclist dies after collision with Miami-Dade police vehicle
Two cyclists hit by marked police car early Sunday morning
VIRGINIA KEY, Fla. – A cyclist has died, and another is injured after they were involved in a crash with a Miami-Dade Police Department marked vehicle.
According to police, the crash happened at approximately 7:17 a.m. Sunday on Arthur Lamb Jr. Road near Virginia Key Beach.
“The officer involved in this incident is assigned here and regularly patrols the causeway and the surrounding areas,” said Det. Angel Rodriguez with the Miami-Dade Police Department. “The officer was quite visibly shaken up,” Rodriguez said.
It’s still unclear who was at fault, but the two cyclists and police car somehow collided.
Both cyclists were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, one in stable condition and one critical.
Doctors pronounced the cyclist in critical condition deceased after arriving at the hospital.
The entrance to the park was closed for hours as the traffic homicide investigation unfolded. The police vehicle involved in the wreck was towed from the scene.
Miami-Dade traffic homicide detectives are investigating the incident.
“The cause of death will be determined pending the autopsy from the medical examiners office,” said Rodriguez.
