MIAMI – Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies were praising K9 Coral on Tuesday. The canine deputy joined the department about three months ago and on Monday she caught yet another suspected cocaine dealer.
Lazaro Rodriguez, 43, was driving a 2014 Ford Explorer, on U.S. 1 near 63rd Street when Sgt. Joel Slough stopped him just before 9:10 a.m. on Monday in Marathon, deputies said. Slough’s request for Coral’s assistance paid off.
The Labrador Retriever sniffed out cocaine and cash inside the Ford Explorer.
Deputies said that after she found $3,074 and about 173 grams of cocaine, or 6.1 ounces, Rodriguez confessed to buying the cocaine in Miami and selling it in the Florida Keys. He is facing a cocaine trafficking charge.
