MIAMI (CBSMiami) — An early morning police involved shooting in Hollywood was the result of officers checking out reports of a domestic abuse situation.

A barrage of gunshots shattered the quiet night in a neighborhood near North 72 Avenue and Taft Street.

Police shot a man after he called them to say he had just shot and killed his wife inside their home.

“He was armed with a handgun and he would shoot any officers that arrived on scene,” said Chief Thomas Sanchez with Hollywood Police. “Eventually he came out acting erratically and a confrontation ensued at which time he was shot by our officers.”

The two officers involved gave their accounts of what happened. Meanwhile, the unidentified man is at the hospital in stable condition.

Police set up a perimeter in the neighborhood for hours, blocking traffic as they investigate both, the wife’s shooting and their shooting of the husband.

As the sun came up, all the police nearby was a rude awakening for people starting their day.

“This is South Florida. It’s hard to find a place where this kind of stuff doesn’t happen. Last place I lived they raided a house in the middle of the day and I heard 11 gunshots then. And this neighborhood’s already had a bunch of stuff happen,” said neighbor Roger Jodra.

The police chief points out incidences like this are a huge, growing problem and society must do better.

“This is a contant reminder of the difficulties we’re having in our society with domestic violence. Last year our police department responded to over 5,000 calls and investigations of domestic violence. Half our homicides last year were domestic violence related,” said Sanchez.

No word yet on who the couple is or why the man shot his wife. She’s still in the house as police piece it all together.
