Man, 50, dies after being struck by car in Deerfield Beach
Driver returned to scene after collision, authorities say
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – A South Florida family is demanding justice after a 50-year-old man was fatally struck by a car Monday morning.
The incident occurred in the area of Sample Road and Northwest Fifth Street.
Relatives identified the victim as Pedro Escalante.
His son, Neimer Escalante, told Local 10 News that his father was crossing the street after leaving a nearby store to get back home and was struck by a vehicle whose driver never stopped.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Miranda Grossman, the driver of the Honda Element returned to the scene and is cooperating with detectives.
Neimer Escalante, however, said he wants the driver to be arrested so that his father, a Guatemalan native who worked in landscaping and leaves behind three children, can have justice.
“He’s very kind, generous, calm,” he said about his father. “I feel very bad because it’s my father.”
Pedro Escalante was taken to a local hospital after the crash, where he died.
His relatives question why the driver initially left the scene.
Authorities have not said whether the driver will face charges or be cited.
