Man Sentenced To 6 Months In Jail For Overpaying Child Support [PHOTOS] | Hip-Hop Wired
The court system has zero tolerance for dead beat daddies and their refusal to fork over child support payments.
But what happens when a man does the right thing like a Spike Joint and still faces the usual punishment?
That is the struggle Clifford Hall of Houston, TX is facing after being sent to jail for 180 days for overpaying child support and exceeding the allotted visits with his 11-year-old son.
According to FOX26 Houston, a glitch in the system caused his job to withhold his child support payments in lopsided sums and when he discovered this, Hall paid $3K in back payments to avoid the prison bars, per his lawyer Tyesha Elam.
But when it came to the next hearing, Hall saw an overzealous judge throw a monkey wrench his way that landed him in the very predicament he tried to avoid. When Hall and his ex were in Judge Lisa Millard’s court last November he owed nothing.
But the attorney representing the child’s mother wanted Hall to pay her three grand in attorney fees and Judge Millard agreed.
Court documents also reveal Hall wasn’t following the court’s scheduled times to pick his son up for visitation. Another modification Hall says he knew nothing about.
“The Judge ended up sentencing him to 6 months in jail.” Elam says. “When she said I remand you to the Harris County Jail for 180 days my mouth just dropped,” says Hall. “This entire situation is shocking to me,” says community activist Quanell X.
“I’ve never seen one like this.” X is the leader of Houston’s New Black Panther Party and has tried to petition for Hall’s freedom to no avail. Judge Millard told FOX26 that Hall walking out of court caused her to find him guilty of contempt.
First they waste the man’s time for having his ducks in a row and then they slap him with the baby mama’s court bills. Hit the gallery to see the sole double standard where a man can’t catch a break.
