Although a homeless man was convicted of first-degree murder in a courtroom in Broward County, Florida, last week, his Miami criminal defense lawyer may be able to help ensure that his prison sentence isn’t as harsh as prosecutors are calling for.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, a regional media outlet, 59-year-old Oscar Camejo faces life in prison for the killing of 62-year-old Jill Dornbush, a woman who had allowed him and his girlfriend at the time to use her shower and store some of their belongings at her house.

The source reports that the incident occurred on April 30, 2010, when prosecutors say the defendant stabbed the victim in the neck following an argument. Although Camejo told the court that Dornbush had killed herself in an attempt to frame him, his ex-girlfriend — who witnessed the homicide — took the stand and provided “damaging testimony against him.”

Camejo’s sentencing is scheduled for Thursday, June 13.
