Police: Woman bilked more than $150,000 from former South Miami employer – South Miami – MiamiHerald.com

She was recognized as one of Nordstrom’s top shoppers, buying thousands of dollars worth of high-end shoes, purses and jewelry.
But South Miami police say Katty Hernandez’s shopping spree — which cost more than $150,000 — was paid for on someone else’s dime.
Now she faces charges including grand theft, felony organized scheme to defraud over $50,000, felony money laundering and fraudulently using someone’s identification. Dozens of designer items, with names like Gucci and Prada, were hauled away from her Coral Gables apartment Monday, most in bags and boxes with the tags on.
“That’s someone’s livelihood,” said South Miami police Sgt. Henry Guzman. “We are hoping she will never be able to do this again.”
Hernandez, 27, first was arrested in 2012 after her South Miami employer — whom police would not identify — noticed she had fraudulently spent $2,700. Hernandez was fired and sentenced to two years of probation.
But, before the year was out, police again were alerted to possible illegal activities. They investigated for more than a year, and said they learned that Hernandez was fraudulently using her former employer’s business credit cards and bank account under her own name.
She set up a Nordstrom account and filled her apartment with clothes, shoes and purses, Guzman said.
Now, police are broadening their investigation, Guzman said.
“If she could do this once, there is a good chance there are more victims,” he said.
