Road-rage arrest made after University of Miami security alert lifted – Coral Gables – MiamiHerald.com

A man reportedly at the center of a road rage incident on U.S. 1, which led to the University of Miami sending out a security alert to students, has been taken into custody.

Jesse Hernandez, 27, has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of marijuana.

The second driver involved in the road rage incident late Sunday told Coral Gables police a man threatened him with a gun and then ran off into the area of 57th Avenue and Levante Avenue.

Concerned that the man, later identified as Hernandez, may have been hiding on UM’s campus police sent an alert to students.

The first alert was posted on the university’s website and sent voice mail and Twitter just before 8:30 p.m.

Students inside the Red Road Commons apartment building were asked to stay indoors and no one else was allowed inside.

“Basically they said that there’s an intruder that’s armed and we should stay away from the area,” Irene Nutiganti said.

Another student, Christian Mock, said, “I got a text message and voice mail both saying that there was somebody potentially armed near us.”

“I didn’t really listen to it at first until I got talked to by a lady saying there’s somebody on the loose who was armed and it kind of made me pay a little bit more attention to it,” Logan Hulsmeyer said.

A helicopter and police dogs were used during the search which came up empty.

Officers located a white pickup truck that they believed belonged to Hernandez.

Coral Gables police cleared the scene and allowed students in and out of their apartments again by 11 p.m.

Additional law enforcement personnel were posted throughout the campus and the surrounding areas as a precaution throughout the night.

Early Monday morning, university police arrest Hernandez when he reportedly returned for his truck.
