TX Man Shot by Deputies Had Hands Up; ‘Sensational,’ Sheriff Gripes

A video shows two Bexar County, Texas, deputies opening fire and killing a man who appears to have his hands up, reports the San Antonio Express-News. Gilbert Flores, 41, died when deputies Greg Vasquez and Robert Sanchez shot him during a call for a domestic disturbance last Friday morning. The cellphone video, first published by KSAT 12, an ABC affiliate, appears to show Flores standing still without a weapon in his hands, which are open and raised at the time at the shooting. The deputies said he was armed with a knife when they arrived.

Deputies found a woman with a cut on her head who was holding a baby. Sheriff Susan Pamerleau said the deputies struggled with Flores for at least 20 minutes, attempting to take him into custody using a Taser and shield. Vasquez and Sanchez are on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation. On Monday, the sheriff’s office posted a statement on Facebook that criticized the airing of the video as “sensational” and “unethical and sad.” The post encouraged people who disagree with the publishing of the video to “call KSAT and let them know what you think” and listed the station’s phone number.
