Victim’s Family in Deadly MacArthur Causeway Crash Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit
The attorney for the family of Dr. Malcolm Lloyd, who was killed while riding in a Lamborghini that crashed on the MacArthur Causeway, spoke out Monday about the lawsuit he filed late Friday.
“He had his whole life ahead of him. Beautiful family, wonderful business, incredible reputation…lights out in a blink of an eye,” said Lloyd family attorney Ervin Gonzalez.
Dr. Lloyd was killed while riding in the Lamborghini driven by Andres Esteban Toro. Authorities said Toro was drunk and driving in excess of one-hundred miles per hour when the accident happened. According to Gonalez, investigators said there were no signs that Toro used his breaks before smashing into the SUV.
Police said Toro had a .173 blood alcohol level at 4:53 a.m., more than twice the legal limit. A second sample, taken almost five hours later, showed Toro had a .132 blood alcohol level, police said. The legal limit in Florida is .08.
Dr. Lloyd died at the scene of the accident.
“He was only 42-years-old,” said Gonzalez. “A lovely wife who is a Broadway star, has been in Chicago, Aida, and lovely little children, Maxwell, one, and Nicholas, who is five.”
Lloyd was a biomedical engineer, medical doctor, and health care information services entrepreneur. He also founded a company that distilled a highly-rated vodka.
“He was in the prime of his life,” said Sheila Lloyd, Malcolm’s sister. “He had a successful business. He recently got married and started a family. This was all ripped from us.”
Toro’s defense attorney, Kendall Coffey issued a statement for Toro Monday that read:
“As Dr. Malcom Lloyd’s family struggles to deal with the awful tragedy that occurred on April 24, 2014, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Words are inadequate to express our sorrow for their loss.”
Toro faces criminal charges including one count of DUI manslaughter and one count of DUI causing serious bodily injury. He also faces an additional charge of vehicular homicide.
Toro’s bond was increased to $250,000 when the new charges were added this week. Toro was still in the hospital earlier this week due to the injuries he suffered in the crash.
