Workers rescued after mechanism fails on scaffolding in Miami Bea

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Authorities responded to a building Friday morning in Miami Beach after two workers got stuck on the scaffolding they were on.

According to Miami Beach police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez, a mechanism failed as the crew was working on a building at 3 Island Ave.

“One guy was on the top yelling at the other guy because only one side was going down. The whole thing was moving together, but the one side was really at an angle,” witness Jim Clearwater told Local 10 News reporter Amy Viteri. “I said, ‘Oh my God. Something terrible is happening here.’”

Clearwater said he called his wife, who then called 911.

Miami Beach firefighters used a bucket truck to get the workers down safely shortly after 10:30 a.m.

Authorities said the incident left the scaffolding at a dangerous angle, however the scaffolding was still secure.

This gave Miami Beach Fire Rescue crews time to bring down harnesses to the workers before bringing them down via the bucket truck.

“The mesh that is protecting any debris that comes off the side of the building is kind of what got caught up in their mechanical system, and it (stopped them) from being able to go up and down,” Miami Beach Fire Rescue Chief Digna Abello said.

The workers, whose identities have not been released, were not injured during the incident.
